 Japan facility

BIR designs and builds permanent high-energy x-ray systems for screening large shipping containers and vehicles. With its strategic partners and advanced technology‚ BIR has proven its ability to design‚ build‚ and support global supply
chain security.

These facilities utilize linear accelerator x-ray sources to penetrate an entire cargo container or truck. Then BIR detectors and software architecture transform these high-energy x-rays into images of incomparable quality and clarity.

  Linear Accelerator

BIR systems are designed with linear accelerators that generate from 1 to 6 pulses. In this example‚ three-pulse integration is shown. The object being scanned moves a predetermined distance in synchronization with the pulsing of the accelerator. Each three-pulse sequence is integrated into data which creates a line of the developing image (the gun below).
At a border crossing in Shenzhen‚ People Republic of China‚ BIR detectors have scanned over 170‚000 vehicles since the system was installed in the mid-1990s.
BIR systems in Japan perform contraband interdiction and manifest verification of
ISO containers arriving and leaving key Japanese seaports. In fact‚ the revenue
generated form contraband interdiction offsets the cost of the initial system
purchase and installation.

BIR permanent x-ray inspection facilities can be configured with single- or dual-beam linear accelerator x-ray sources in 5 MV‚ 6 MV and 9 MV energy levels. BIR detectors are manufactured with 1.4 mm‚ 2.3 mm and 4.6 mm pitch. In typical systems‚ these give pixel resolutions in the cargo of 1.1 mm‚ 1.8 mm and 3.6 mm respectively with 65‚000
gray scales.
BIR high-energy systems penetrate densely packed cargo as well as filled tanker trucks‚ yet produce images with wide dynamic range for separating and identifying objects located in dense‚ tightly packed or sparse areas of the container. False compartments in trucks and density variations in cargo such as shielded isotopes can be easily discriminated.
