BIR's ACTIS+™ is the low-cost way to add CT capabilities to existing real-time radiography systems. ACTIS+ facilitates high-speed CT imaging for materials R&D‚ flaw detection‚ assembly verification‚ reverse engineering‚ as well as other important design and manufacturing applications. ACTIS+ allows you to build upon current inspection routines to improve your overall capabilities for quality and process control.

ACTIS+ integrates CT into your existing real-time radiographic system. A turntable/evaluation stage is placed between the x-ray tube and the image intensifier. The scanned object is rotated under ACTIS+ computer control while data are collected from the RTR system's video output. Video can be terminated at ACTIS+‚ or routed on through.

Performance of ACTIS+ is directly related to the configuration of your current real-time radiography system. The tables below show a few examples of the applications‚ system configurations and expected performance.

You select the location for the scan by moving the evaluation stage up or down under program control‚ then begin scanning. Data are collected as the object is rotated.

When data collection is complete‚ ACTIS+ uses the information to mathematically reconstruct a cross-sectional image of the object. The image is displayed on the computer screen with gray levels in the image representing x-ray attenuation (proportional to density) at each point in the object. In general‚ air will appear black and the maximum density will appear white.

Cross-sectional CT images are much easier to interpret than conventional radiographic images because features in the image do not overlap as in traditional radiography. In addition‚ density differences within the object are easily identified and quantified.
 Application 1: Large Objects‚ Medium- to Low-Resolution
If real-time system configuration  is:  ACTIS performance will be:
X-ray Source: Standard Tube  Resolution (visible): 1 line pairs/mm
 X-ray Spot Size: 1.5 mm  Contrast: 1%
Image Intensifier/Camera Resolution: 0.7 line pairs/mm  Scan Time: 30 Seconds
 Field-of-View: 247 mm to 455mm
Image Intensifier field size: 345 mm
Application 2: Medium Objects‚ Medium- to High-Resolution
If real-time system configuration  is:  ACTIS performance will be:
X-ray Source: Microfocus Tube  Resolution (visible):4 line pairs/mm
 X-ray Spot Size: 0.2 mm  Contrast: 1%
Image Intensifier/Camera Resolution: 1.4 line pairs/mm  Scan Time: 30 Seconds
 Field-of-View: 65 mm to 117mm
Image Intensifier field size: 165 mm

Application 3: Small Objects‚ Very High-Resolution
If real-time system configuration  is:  ACTIS performance will be:
X-ray Source: Microfocus Tube  Resolution (visible): 20 line pairs/mm
 X-ray Spot Size: 0.55 mm  Contrast: 1%
Image Intensifier/Camera Resolution: 1.4 line pairs/mm  Scan Time: 30 Seconds
 Field-of-View: 12 mm to 22 mm
Image Intensifier field size: 140 mm
