Now the best of both worlds are combined in one nondestructive metrology system.
BIR announces a laser scanner option for its ACTIS Standard Focus CT/DR systems. You get the speed and accuracy of laser scanning for external surface geometry capture along with the nondestructive internal geometry capture of x-ray CT—all on one system.
The scanner utilizes advanced laser technology that captures accurate geometry information from shiny metal parts without the need for painting or other surface preparation. The laser scan data supplements the CT point cloud information to produce a more accurate total package of information than can be produced by either technology alone.
The system is ideal for aluminum castings and other non-ferrous parts that contain geometric features that cannot be obtained by line-of-site scanning techniques. The MSG2 scan head from Metron has onboard intelligence that reads up to six axis of dynamic position data and internally performs real-time transformation of scanner data into the parts global coordinate system.
The BIR ACTIS system architecture generates point cloud data from CT images and also accepts the data from the MSG2 to generate point clouds from the laser scan data. The two point clouds can be merged in third-party software to adjust the internal and external geometries from both scanning modalities. The result is a model of internal and external features that is more detailed and accurate than the individual point clouds from the separate systems.
